Hey, how did the social justice luncheon go on Sunday?

Also, why is it called the "social justice" team?

the social justice luncheon went well...it was basically a time where we shared ideas for how mosaic might be active in doing good in our community. the luncheon was a start...a beginning point.

and it is called "social justice" because...well, quite honestly, because that was the name i threw out when we originally started talking about various ways in which people might become involved in mosaic this fall.

to claim that there is a need for social justice is to recognize that within society there exists a tremendous amount of injustice and inequality. to strive for social justice is to struggle against injustice and inequality and to be an advocate for those who have no voice. social justice is about answering the biblical call to free people from the chains of oppression...whatever those chains might be. social justice is about trying to be incarnate Christ within our present culture.

one group that deals specifically with issues of social justice is sojourners. you can visit their website at www.sojo.net.

Well I'll admit up front that I'm generally politically liberal, although I haven't always been. For me it is nice that there is a Christian magazine that doesn't act like I'm a crazy hell bound heathen because I vote for liberals more than conservatives. Anyway, I just wanted to say that social justice is not all about politics. It is about righting injustice in society which can be done no matter what your political affiliation. Of course one's voting practices should take into account how that candidate will help or hurt society, no matter what his or her political party is.

As for the luncheon, as Lynette said, we discussed some things we could do to help people in Nashville. I think we may check out some of the organizations that are already working in Nashville to see how we can get involved in the community.

I think working with already existing groups here in Nashville is a great idea.

yeah, the lunch thing was cool. it was just preliminary though. no solid plans yet. most of the ideas involved existing organizations like it was said. some specific ideas were: to help the area homeless (individuals, families, teenagers) depending the organization, work with kids whose parents were in jail. those are the ones i remember. obviously there is a ton we could do, so always other ideas are welcome. i don't really know what the next step is, but i hope we get this thing going soon, especially so we can involve those within our church group.
