What are your favorite lines in songs? Someone once stated, I think there's gotta be substance in the melody. Otherwise, the song's just like candy...good tasting, but of no nutritional value.

“I ask why, but in my mind I can’t rely on myself” – linkin park

“it’s our struggles that define us, and the hardships we endure. your spirit can’t be broken down. you’ve come too far.” - hatebreed

“losing touch, I lost my way. lost for words, without a thing to say. lost for words, I lost my faith. but I’ll try again! step it up! - throwdown

i'm always looking for a positive message in my music. it really gets me by. i listen to a lot of hardcore. it's good to just grit your teeth and scream along with it. the world gets better.

probably can't narrow it down to favorites but I've been thinking about these today

"anyone will tell you just how hard it is to make and keep a friend...maybe they'll short-sell ya...maybe it's you Judas in the end..." Joni Mitchell..."Jericho"

"you can penetrate any place you go"--the Beatles "i dig a pony"

"i wish that i knew what i know now...when i was younger."---the faces "oh la la"

"where I'll end up i think only God really knows" Cat Steven " the wind"

"it's what you where from ear to ear...and not from head to toe that matters" Annie "your never fully dressed without smile"

"love is not a victory march...it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah" Leonard Cohen "hallelujah"

well, everyone's doing one-liners. this is going to be a whole song. sorry, guys.

mewithoutYou // nice & blue

you were a song i couldn't sing
you were a story i couldn't tell
i've only ever loved myself
but i've loved myself so well
and how defeated i return
(you're nice and blue, nice and blue)
i missed what i was supposed to learn
as all i learned about was missing you

a life left half-behind
though no longer blind, i can't yet see
i'm not the boy that i once was
but i'm not the man i'll be
i've been waiting now, for six years on
(and i've only just begun)
for the day you'll hold her in your arms
my risen Lord, my precious one

i once was the wine, and you the wineglass
i once was alive, when you held me
God became the glass, and all things left were emptiness
if you look out and see a trace of dark red
that used to be my face
in the clarity of His grace, remember me

i really think mewithoutYou has some of the most poetic lyrics i've ever come across. and the songwriter is autistic. go figure.

Basically all of the lyrics on U2's Achtung Baby are my favorite. Let's go with one or two highlights from each song:

1. Zoo Station:
- Time is a train, makes the future the past. Leaves you standing in the station, your face pressed up against the glass.

2. Even Better Than the Real Thing:
- You're honey, child, to a swarm of bees. Gonna blow right through you like a breeze. Give me one last dance, we'll slide down the surface of things.

3. One (it's hard to pick just one line from this song of course):
- Have you come here for forgiveness? Have you come to raise the dead? Have you come here to play Jesus to the leppers in your head? Did I ask too much, more than a lot? You gave me nothing, now it's all I got. We're one, but we're not the same. We hurt each other, then we do it again.

4. Until the End of the World (this song needs to be read or heard in it's entirety)
- Haven't seen you in quite awhile. I was down in the hold just passing time. Last time we met it was a low-lit room. We were as close together as a bride and groom. We ate the food, we drank the wine. Everybody having a good time. Except you. You were talking about the end of the world.

5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (if I had a favorite lyric it would be somewhere in this song):
- You're dangerous, 'cause you're honest. You're dangerous, you don't know what you want. You left my heart empty as a vacant lot, for any spirit to haunt.

6. So Cruel (this song does not quit):
- We crossed the line. Who pushed who over? It doesn't matter to you, it matters to me. We're cut adrift but still floating. I'm only hanging on to watch you go down.

7. The Fly:
- A man will rise, a man will fall, from the sheer face of love, like a fly from a wall. It's no secret at all.

8. Mysterious Ways:
- Johnny take a walk with your sister in the rain. Let her talk about the things you can't explain. To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal. If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel (on your knees, boy!).

9. Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World:
- I dreamed that I saw Dali on a supermarket trolley. He was trying to throw his arms around a girl. He took an open-top beetle through the eye of a needle. He was trying to throw his arms around the world.

10. Ultraviolet (Light My Way):
- You bury your treasure where it can't be found. But your love is like a secret that's been passed around. There is a silence that comes to a house where no one can sleep. I guess that's the price of love, I know it's not cheap.

11. Acrobat:
- Yeah I'd break bread and wine if there was a church I could recieve in, cause I need it now. To take the cup, to fill it up, to drink it slow, I can't let you go. And I must be an acrobat to talk like this and act like that.

12. Love is Blindness:
- In a parked car in a crowded street, you see your love made complete. Thread is ripping. The knot is slipping. Love is blindness. Love is clockworks and cold steel. Fingers too numb to feel. Squeeze the handle. Blow out the candle. Love is blindness.

There, now that I've written an entire analytical essay, I'll stop.

"i radio heaven
i get mixed signals
i move the antenna
i switch the channels
i lie in this bed
my satellite dish"
i radio heaven by Over the Rhine

"Changes come
Turn my world around

I have my father's hand
I have my mother's tongue
I look for redemption in everyone

I wanna wear your ring
I have a song to sing
It ain't over babe
In fact it's just begun

Changes come
Turn my world around
Changes come
Bring the whole thing down

I wanna have our baby
Somedays I think that maybe
This ol' world's too fucked up
For any firstborn son

There is all this untouched beauty
The light the dark both running through me
Is there still redemption for anyone

Jesus come
Turn the world around
Lay my burden down
Turn this world around
Bring the whole thing down
Bring it down"
changes come by Over the Rhine

"Hush little baby don’t say a word
Daddy’s gone and bought you a great big heaven to rest in
He’s bought it with blood and put the seal in your heart
it’ll give you the hope you need to get up and start again

when all the things you thought you left behind are still hanging on
and everything you try to do right ends up all wrong

and on the inside everyone else seems basically fine
but on the inside even they won’t let go of the dead and cling to what’s alive
well I AM"

Hush by Waterdeep

"do I murder
when I forget you from afar
too drunk on the poison of endless roads
and the countless smokey bars

but tension is to be loved
when it is like a passing note
to a beautiful, beautiful chord"

Tension is a Passing Note by Sixpence None the Richer

"So when she finally picks it up
Checking for a dial tone
To finger in the number of her
Lover's Telephone

I will be resting on the earlobe
That I used to hunt and peck
I will slowly, slowly wrap myself around
her pretty little neck

Then I'll begin the explanation
As to why she can no longer breathe"

A Blueprint of Something Never Finished by Pedro the Lion

"Walk down a dark street naked on a winter night
Run from the law like the sunday I saw the light
To defend your spirit I would go to war
I would chase the devil to Jehovah's door

I would do anything
To cover you body and soul, girl
I would give everything in the world
To cover you (cover you)
To cover you

Set my guitar on fire with a long stemmed match
Dance while it burns and laugh when it turns to ash
I would torch everything to keep you warm
I would do anything to keep you from harm, honey"

To Cover You by The Choir[/b]

"Such Great Heights"

I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles
In our eyes are mirror images and when
We kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay
True, it may seem like a stretch, but
Its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you're away when I am missing you to death

Ben Gibbard - the Postal Service

"The Fleecing"

deep green hills whose shoulders fade into thick grey
tall wet grass whose flesh makes fools of grazing sheep
whose fleecing makes a fool of me
who shall i blame for this sweet and heavy trouble
for every stupid struggle i don't know
i could buy you a drink
i could tell you all about it
i could tell you why i doubt it and why i still believe
i can't say it like i sing it
i can't sing it like i think it
i can't think like i feel it
and i don't feel a thing
...why i still believe it
why i need it
and what the pharisees can't see
we'd have more drinks
and speak of so many things
but i don't know you and you don't know me

David Bazan - Pedro the Lion

City swallows trees
And I am responsible
'Cause I am indifferent to these things
I got blood on my windshield
And what must be hundreds of movies in my head
'Cause I like the glow of the screen
Excuses not to speak and darkness surrounding me
And the way the sun feels
When you step out in it, after the credits
And float back to your car on cinema air
And please tell the whole world I am here
Here to be their hero
With a perfect body and straight teeth
And strings swelling every time I bleed
With a perfect body and straight teeth
And strings swelling every time I bleed
On the big screen with my big dreams
'Cause you know I am the drama king .

-"Cinema Air" (gloria record)

run like a race for family
when you hear like you're alone
the rusty gears of morning
and faceless, busy phones
we gladly run in circles
but the shape we meant to make is gone

and love is a tired symphony
you hum when you're awake
and love is a crying baby
mama warned you not to shake
and love's the best sensation
hiding in the lion's mane

so i'll clear the road, the gravel
and the thornbush in your path
that burns a scented oil
that i'll drip into your bath
the water's there to warm you
and the earth is warmer when you laugh

and love is the scene i render
when you catch me wide awake
and love is the dream you enter
though i shake & shake & shake you
and love's the best endeavor
waiting in the lion's mane

-"Lion's mane" (iron and wine)

take a long drive with me
on california one, california one
and the road a-winding goes
from golden gate to roaring cliff-side
and the light is softly low as our hearts become sweetly untied
beneath the sun of california one

take a long dra with me of california wine
and the wine it tastes so sweet
as we lay our eyes to wander
and the sky, it stretches deep

will we rest our heads to slumber beneath the vines of california wine? beneath the sun of california one

annabelle lies, sleeps with quiet eyes
on this sea-drift sun
what can you do?
and if i said, O it's in your head
on this sea-drift sun
what can you do?

---------------------------------------------------

we're calling all bed wetters and ambulance chasers
poor pick-pocketsm bring 'em in
come join the youth and beauty brigade

we're lining up the light-loafere'd
and the bored bench warmers
castaways and cutouts, fill it up
come join the youth and beauty brigade
noting will stand in our way

i figured i'd paid my debt to society
by paying my overdue fines at the multnomah county library, at the library
they said 'son, go join up
go join the youth and beauty brigade'

nothing will stand in our way

-"California One" (the decemberists)

All This Time
Sting

I looked out across the river today. I saw a city in the fog and an old church tower where the seagulls play. I saw sad shire horses walking home in the sodium light, two priests on a ferry, october geese on a cold winter's night.

All this time the river flowed, endlessly, to the sea.

Two priests came round our house tonight, one young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying, to serve the final right. One to love, one to teach which way the cold wind blows. Fussing and flapping in priestly black, like a murder of crows.

All this time the river flowed, endlessly, to the sea. If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river and I'd bury the old man. I'd bury him at sea.

"Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth. Better to be poor than be a fat man in the eye of a needle." As these words are spoken I swear I hear the old man laughing, "What good is a used up world, and how can it be worth having?"

All this time the river flowed, endlessly, like a silent tear. All this time the river flowed. Father, if Jesus exists, then how come he never lived here?

Teachers told us, "The Romans built this place. They built a wall, and a temple, and an edge of the empire garrison town. The lived and they died. They prayed to their gods, but the stone gods did not make a sound. Their empire crumbled till all that was left were the stones the workmen found."

All this time the river flowed, in the falling light of a northern sun. All this time the river flowed. Men go crazy in congregations, they only get better one by one.

sleeping at last // trees (hallway of leaves)

it's just beyond those trees
the place i've been dreaming of
will you follow me?

trust me, i know where i'm going
it's somewhere here within the leaves
there must be some mistake

trust me, i know where i'm going
we'll cut a path out for us
through the green seas
we'll make hallways of leaves

i know it seems
this is just some crazy dream
and i know my eyes were closed
but this dream feels more real to me
than life itself

my ear is pressed upon this wall
for behind it is that place
the door is locked
but i'll do whatever it takes

you've got to trust me
i know where i'm going
will you follow me?
will you follow me, still?

in those moments that i feel
we are closer than ever before
the world drops out from under our feet
but i believe the darkest of fights
means we're almost there

there is always something there
to take our hearts like theives

when we arrive
we will hear voices sing

nothing matters anymore

it's beginning to get dark
but don't worry
i know where we are
will you follow me, still?

-- anyone feeling a mix cd swap?--

I will always forgive you, no matter what you may do
After all, i'm still me, and you are still you.
~griffin house, 'lay down in your fields'

Convinced of my deception
I've always been a fool
I fear this love reaction
Just like you said I would

A rose could never lie
About the love it brings
And I could never promise
To be any of those things

If I was not so weak
If I was not so cold
If I was not so scared of being broken
Growing old
I would be...
I would be...
I would be...

Blessed are the shallow
Depth they'll never find
Seemed to be some comfort
In rooms I try to hide

Exposed beyond the shadows
You take the cup from me
Your dirt removes my blindness
Your pain becomes my peace
~jars of clay, 'frail'

One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers

One life
But we’re not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
~u2, 'one'

I breathe the mist
floating about the stars
I can caress with velvet hands
I breathe the mist
floating within without
this pen between my fingers

Messiah
I know you are there
within without me holding me
Messiah
I know you are there
catching carrying this beautiful mess

escape the pain
within a room somewhere
escape the pain
so deep inside the soul
I have no key
no map to find
~sixpence none the richer, 'within a room somewhere'

Christians, we're all afraid of fire
We prefer to suck on pacifiers
Baby pacifists, we're throwing fits
We don't shake hands, we shake our fists
We're cannibals
We watch our brothers fall
We eat our own, the bones and all
Finally fell asleep on the plane
To wake up and see we're going down in flames
We're going down, down, down in flames
We're gonna drown, drown, drown insane
We see the problem and the risk,
but nothing's solved.
~relient k, 'down in flames'

Am I at the point of no improvement?
What of the death I still dwell in?
I try to excel, but I feel no movement
Can I be free of this unreleasable sin?
Never underestimate my Jesus
You're telling me that there's no hope
I'm telling you, you're wrong
Never underestimate my Jesus
When the world around you crumbles,
He will be strong
He will be strong.
~relient k, 'for the moments i feel faint'

If you've got the money, honey, I've got the time.
We'll go honky-tonkin', we'll have a time.

You run short of money, I'll run short of time.
You got no more money, honey, I got no more time.

Madeira wanted me to post her favorite lyrics:

"I love my boots. My boots and me
We love to swing from tree to tree.
I feel so happy when they're on my feet.
We're best friends, yeah, my boots and me."

"Walking, walking, walking, walking,
Hop hop hop. Hop hop hop.
Running, running, running.
Running, running, running.
Now let's stop. Now lets stop."
